Dehua: Statuette of Arhat

CHINA, Fujian, Quanzhou; Qing dynasty (1644–1911);Porcelain; H: 22.2 cm;Guangdong Provincial Museum, Guangzhou, China
The Arhat is portrayed with wide cheeks, a tucked chin, and a broad forehead which is inclined slightly forward. He appears to be in contemplation with his eyes closed. The body is clothed in inner and outer robes with a cloud-shape clasp. The robes flow down naturally onto a throne in the shape of rocks by the sea. He sits in royal ease position and holds a lotus in his left hand, while the right hand rests on the right knee.
The Dehua statuette is glazed in a gentle tone of bluish-white and is a vivid portrayal of an Arhat in contemplation.
