Ananda Okkyaung Monastery: Prophecy of Dipamkara Buddha
MYANMAR, Mandalay, Bagan; 18th century
This mural is based on a story from the Jataka tales. In the top left corner, there are five figures with a similar appearance. The Dipamkara Buddha, the tallest figure, wears a monastic robe and has a golden arch above his head. Trailing behind are four disciples holding alms bowls. In an act of piety, Megha lays across the muddy road so that the Buddha might cross without soiling his feet. Marveling at this act of devotion and selflessness, Dipamkara Buddha proclaims that Megha will attain enlightenment and become Sakyamuni Buddha in one of his next lives. The fluid lines and the bright colors in this work are typical of 18th century Buddhist art in Myanmar. |
