Maitreya Bodhisattva
THAILAND; 8th century; Bronze; H: 54.6 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
The statue has been identified as Maitreya from the stupa ornament on the topknot. The features are softened in the handsome face and the body beneath is long and slender. Although the arms are mostly missing, the figure may have held a vase in the left hand and raised the right in vitarka (teaching) mudra. The outstretched arms and the thrust of the right hip give the statue a dynamic posture. The figure wears a dhoti secured at the waist by a knotted cord. The details of the legs and knees below are carefully modeled. |
