Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Niche 125: Avalokitesvara Holding Prayer Beads

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Northern Song dynasty (960-1127); Stone; H: 91.5 cm
The original ceiling of this niche was destroyed but it has since been repaired. The niche is 1 m wide, 1.26 m high, and 0.76 m deep. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is depicted standing barefoot, with each foot on a lotus pedestal. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress, a shawl, a long gown, and ornaments. Stoles swirl around the figure as if being whipped in the wind. The Bodhisattva has a gentle, smiling face and a graceful posture. This is one of the most famous Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) carvings in Beishan.
