Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 136: Cintamani Avalokitesvara

This Bodhisattva is also known as Avalokitesvara in a White Robe. According to the “Introductory Chapter” of the Lotus Sutra, Cintamani Avalokitesvara cleanses the mind to resemble a jewel in order to attain Buddhahood. In the Great Compassion Dharani Sutra, the Bodhisattva is said to possess the most number of jewels among the others.
The statue is located just outside the south wall of the cave. Avalokitesvara stands barefoot on a lotus pedestal, wearing a tall headdress and an open-collared garment draped with numerous ornaments. Both hands cradle a jewel. The elegant, detached expression and posture of this figure is typical of Bodhisattva images during the Song dynasty (960–1279). |
