Yungang Grotto 10: Bodhisattvas in Contemplation
CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone; H: 5.3 m
These Bodhisattvas are located on the north side of both the east and west walls of the rear chamber. The Bodhisattva on the east wall, shown here, has delicate facial features, thin eyes and arched eyebrows. The lips are curved upwards in a gentle smile. The Bodhisattva wears a long garment and a headdress featuring a small Buddha, as well as ornaments including necklaces and bracelets. The aureole and nimbus behind the Bodhisattva are painted with bright patterns including honeysuckles and flames. The Bodhisattva sits in relaxation posture with one hand clenched into a fist before the chest and the other hand resting on the thigh. |
