Located along the back (west) wall of the main chamber, this Mid-Tang (756–846) reclining Buddha lies upon a rectangular platform. The head rests on the right palm and a pillow adorned with a flower and bird motif. There is an urna between the long crescent eyebrows, and the lips are curled upwards in a gentle smile. The smooth, round face is serene and peaceful. The Buddha wears a monastic robe with a round collar draped over the broad shoulders. The garment presents a neat simplicity, with smooth and regular folds. Scenes of mourning disciples are painted behind the statue. These images of grief contrast with the calm appearance of the Buddha. |
