Chusonji Temple: Crown

JAPAN, Iwate, Nishiiwai; Heian period (794–1185), early 12th century; Wood
This early 12th century crown was worn by the seated One-Syllable Golden Wheel Buddha in Chusonji Temple. It is also known as the Crown of Five Wisdoms, which refers to the five perfected virtues.
The tall crown is carved in wood in gilt floral openwork among three panels, each of which is divided into upper and lower sections. In the center of each section, there is a flower surrounded by half-opened flowers and vines. The flowers, vines, and headband are decorated with black semi-precious stones. A flame symbol appears in the center of the upper edge of each panel.
