Yan Hongzi (Active 1736-1795)
CHINA, Jiangsu, Wuxi; Qing dynasty (1644–1911)
Yan Hongzi was a calligrapher and painter who was best known for his line drawings depicting arhats. In his painting of the Eighteen Arhats, now kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan, each figure has a unique appearance, and holds a Dharma instrument or looks up at the sky. Ink wash gives their faces a three-dimensional quality. The painting is precise and clear with intricate details. |
