Cisheng Temple: Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Henan, Jiaozuo; Later Zhou dynasty (951–960), dated 952; 175 x 89 cm; Nelson–Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri, USA
This mural from the time of the Five Dynasties (907-960) features two Bodhisattvas with narrowed eyes and round faces looking down at a table of offerings. Both have transparent nimbuses and wear headdresses, stoles, and jewelry. The Bodhisattva on the left bends and reaches for an object on the table. The Bodhisattva on the right holds a crown with both hands. On the right side of the image, a Bodhisattva's hand holding a necklace can be seen. The fluttering garments and delicate fingers of the figures are characteristic of the Wu Daozi style" that was widely imitated at the time."
