Mogao Cave 420: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618); Clay; H: 2.43 m
This statue is located on the left side of the back (west) wall niche. The Bodhisattva wears a triple-disc crown and a stole is wrapped around the body. The face is finely sculpted with a thin-ridged nose and a small mouth. The crescent eyebrows and mustache are painted in mineral green. The Bodhisattva wears a long lower garment covered with circular images of hunting scenes surrounded by beads. The vivid colors of the garments contrast with the pale skin of the Bodhisattva. |
