Wat Ratburana: Plaque with Standing Buddha
THAILAND, Ayutthaya; Late 13th–early 14th century; Gold; H: 90 cm; Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, Thailand
This gold repousse image of the Buddha was recovered from Wat Ratburana in Ayutthaya.
The Buddha has curled hair and a large usnisa with a flaming jewel. His eyebrows are connected across the bridge of the nose, and his eyes are cast downwards. He has full lips and a beatific smile. A robe covers both shoulders, and the lower body is dressed in a dhoti with a magnificent band around the waist extending downwards. His right hand is raised in front of his chest forming the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra with the palm exposed and engraved with an auspicious symbol. The left arm is held down by his side. |
