Kizil Cave 77: Heavenly Beings
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 4th century
Heavenly beings are seen at the top of the outer wall in the right corridor. The three beings pictured here stand on the balcony of a heavenly palace. The one on the left is clad in a fitted garment with flowing stoles. The left hand forms a mudra in front of the chest and a bird is perched on the right hand. The central figure holds a lotus in the left hand and the right is placed on the waist. Bare-chested, this being wears a long lower garment and flowing stole. The figure to the right holds a flute in both hands and tilts the head to one side to face the heavenly beings in the center. |
