Erfo Temple Rock Carvings: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Chongqing, Hechuan; Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279); Stone; H: 2.58 m
This carving is located to the left of the Buddha and Six Patriarchs on the west cliff. The Bodhisattva has a round face with an urna placed high on the forehead. The figure wears a hat with long earflaps, a cross-collared monastic robe, and chest ornaments. One arm is held near the abdomen, while the other is raised to the shoulder. Unfortunately, both hands are damaged. Behind the Bodhisattva’s head is a nimbus surrounded by wisps of cloud. |
