Seated Buddha

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Marble; H: 166.7 cm; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom
The Buddha is seated in half lotus position on a Sumeru-shaped inverted lotus throne. The figure's hair is arranged in a flattened usnisa. The stud that represented the urna is missing from the forehead. A plain monastic robe opens to reveal an inner robe that leaves the right shoulder bare, and the slack material pools under the legs. The lotus nimbus is followed by circular radiations, giving onto a foliated surrounding. A blazing mandorla is beyond the nimbus surrounded by five Buddhas seated on lotuses. Traces of red and green pigment indicate the sculpture was once brightly colored.
