MYANMAR, Mandalay, Bagan; Late 11th century
These images of Sarasvati and Mahesvara, Hindu deities adapted into Buddhism as Dharma protectors, are painted on the outer wall of the corridor of Apeyadana Temple. Sarasvati, wearing a cone-shaped jeweled crown encircled by a white nimbus, rides a white swan. A maid holding a lotus flower stands behind the swan. Mahesvara rides a bull, has a tall topknot, and wears bracelets and armlets. Both hands are held high, grasping a trident and jewels. A snake rests on the left shoulder and wraps around the white torso. The bull has white horns and lively eyes. A circle decorated with foliate patterns frames each of the images. |
