Chode Temple Main Hall: Dharma Protector

CHINA, Tibet, Shigatse; Dated 1274
In this segment of a mural painted in the main hall of Chode Temple, a fierce black Dharma protector with three eyes rides on a galloping horse. The Dharma protector's right hand holds up a flag and the left hand holds a rope. A quiver and sword are shown by the waist. A billowing stole flutters above the Dharma protector, and a mandorla of flames is painted behind the figures. There is a small Buddha among the clouds in the upper register. Three smaller Dharma protectors ride on horses in the lower register.
