Incense Container

CHINA; 8th century; Brass; H: 15.9 cm; Todaiji Temple, Nara, Japan
This container, made in China in the 8th century, was brought to Japan and housed in Todaiji Temple.
  The incense container stands on a round base with a concave pillar that curves gently upward. The base, container, and stacked rings measure 15.9 cm high. The container and lid form a sphere with a diameter of 8.5 cm. In the center of the lid, there are five stacked rings surmounted by a jewel. The edges of the stacked rings and the finial are inlaid with silver.
