Kizilgaha Cave 11: Astrological Signs
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 6th–7th century
These astrological signs are located on the central ridge of the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the main chamber. Appearing in sequence from the rear to the front of the chamber are images of Surya, Sakra, Garuda, Vayu, and Candra. The image of Surya is almost completely gone. Buddhas holding alms bowls stand on both sides of Sakra and Vayu. The garuda has a human face, blue hair, the body of a bird, and a nimbus outlined in black. Candra is depicted with a human appearance and rides a chariot. Painted along the rim of the astrological map are images of birds in flight. |
