Maijishan Grotto 127: Attendant Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Western Wei dynasty (535–556); Stone; H: 1.22 m
These two Bodhisattvas, very similar in appearance, flank the seated Buddha in the niche at the back wall. The slender Bodhisattvas, with elaborate headdresses, have a kind countenance. They are dressed in long flowing robes with a stole, and have various ornaments adorning their necks and shoulders. Every ornament and garment fold of the Bodhisattvas is neat and sharply carved. The Bodhisattva on the right leans towards the Buddha with the hands directed in the same direction, and the Bodhisattva on the left also positions the left hand towards the Buddha.
