Wat Chin: Life of the Buddha - Miracle at Sravasti
THAILAND, Ayutthaya; 7th–8th century; Sandstone; H: 129 cm; Bangkok National Museum, Thailand
The panel was discovered at Wat Chin and is believed to be carved during the Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century). The Buddha 's miracle of self-replication at Sravasti is the subject carved on this panel.
A wreath divides it into two sections, with the miracle itself taking place in the top section. Sakyamuni is located at the bottom, seated on a throne with leg pendent. His right hand is raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and a varied audience surrounds him. Some figures have their hands held respectfully, while figures at the bottom prostrate themselves at the Buddha 's feet. A pair of torch-bearers flank the Buddha. In the upper section, lotus stalks extend in all directions, bearing the Buddha 's replications in varying postures such as lying, seated, and standing. The composition symmetrically organized but in an imaginative way. |
