Manuscript Covers

LAOS; Dated 1805; Wood; 6 x 59.5 cm; British Library, London, United Kingdom
According to an inscription, these gilt wooden manuscript covers were used to preserve a Pali text of the Kammavaca made in 1805.
The rectangular front cover has a series of shallow rectangles around the edges, and the prominent central section has a floral decoration inlaid with semi-precious stones. The back cover is gilded with an inscription in Lao Tham script.
The Kammavaca consists of nine Khandakas from the Pali Vinaya Pitaka and serves as a ritual text in Laotian monasteries. The text is used during ordination ceremonies, as well as other special services.
