Yongmunsa Temple Great Canon Hall: Buddha Triad

The assemblage is a particularly decorative example of a Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) wood-carved narrative. An ink inscription under the frame dates the artwork 's completion to 1684. It was listed as Treasure No. 989 in 1989.
The Buddha triad at the front has a Buddha located in the center flanked by two Bodhisattvas holding long lotus stems. Another Buddha triad is on the framed composition and depicts a Buddha seated on a throne that is backed by a mandorla. Surrounding the Buddha are the crowned figures of the Four Heavenly Kings and a symmetrical composition of eight crowned Bodhisattvas with two disciples. The disciples kneel with hands in the anjali (reverence) mudra. The Heavenly Kings are located along the bottom, carrying attributes that identify them. Small figures of Buddhas are located within clouds along the top. |
