Bugaiwuyulaike Temple: Female Devotee

CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan; 5th-6th century
This image is part of a badly damaged mural in Bugaiwuyulaike Temple in Hotan. The mural once depicted a life-sized standing Buddha, but only the feet of the Buddha and part of the lotus pedestal remain. A female devotee is painted beside the Buddha's foot. She has a round face, black hair, large eyes, and a high-bridged nose. The devotee is dressed in a short upper garment with narrow sleeves, an overcoat with blue seams and pointed lapels, and a long pleated skirt. Fine black lines were used to draw the figure.
