Bosalsa Temple: Pair of Standing Buddhas

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Cheongju; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Stone; H: 84 cm
This pair of standing Buddhas discovered in 1970 at Bosalsa Temple, is carved in relief on a single stone. It is inferred from the simple sculptural style that the work was created during the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). The close positioning and symmetry of the figures suggest the partnership of Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna related in the Chapter on the Emergence of the Prabhutaratna Pagoda" of the Lotus Sutra
