CHINA, Sichuan, Chengdu;Southern Liang dynasty (502–557); Sandstone; H: 47 cm; Sichuan Museum, Chengdu, China
The sculpture was excavated from the site of Wanfo Temple and it depicts a Buddha flanked by two disciples and two Bodhisattvas. The Buddha sits cross-legged on a rectangular throne. The right hand forms the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left hand is lowered in another mudra. Two donors are located in front of the Buddha 's throne while two lions flank either side. An elaborate mandorla rises above these figures. The inner section of the mandorla contains seven seated Buddhas while the outer rim is filled with apsaras with fluttering stoles.
