Third Karmapa
CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Gilt copper alloy; H: 21.5 cm; Capital Museum, Beijing, China
Rangjung Dorje is also known as the Third Karmapa, who was the third head of the Karma Kagyu school. He is portrayed wearing the black hat associated with the Karmapas, which he reportedly produced spontaneously at the age of three. The stylized slim eyebrows join the bridge of the nose in a face that appears young. He is seated in full lotus position on a traditional lotus throne and wears monastic robes. Both hands hang over the thighs, their middle fingers touching the floor. |
