Dayun Yuan Temple Amitabha Hall: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA, Shanxi, Changzhi;Later Jin dynasty (936-946), dated 940
This image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is painted beside the place where a statue of Amitabha Buddha once stood in the Amitabha Hall of Dayun Yuan Temple. Avalokitesvara, meant to be the Buddha's attendant, is depicted standing facing slightly to the left. The Bodhisattva has a round face and wears a headdress, earrings, and a necklace. Ornaments hanging from a canopy can be seen above the nimbus. Beside the Bodhisattva's head, there is an inscription within a cartouche stating that this image was sponsored by a family. |
