The pond at the base of this work with its tossing waves and dense lotuses are features of the Northern Qi style. The stele dates from 551 and was restored in 1561 according to an inscription on the back.
Intertwined dragons carved in a way that creates a niche in which Vimalakirti and Manjusri are engaged in debate overarch the top of the stele. The ogee lintel of another niche below the upper configuration, is decorated with heavenly musicians and dancers. A seated Buddha is within the niche with features reminiscent of statues from Eastern Wei dynasty (534–550). Disciples, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas with curled topknots, and deities flanked the Buddha. The sides of the stele are carved with stories of the Buddha 's life. |
