Dairenji Temple: Amitabha Buddha

JAPAN, Kyoto; Muromachi period (1392–1573); Wood; H: 49.9 cm
This wooden Buddha was carved during the Muromachi period (1392-1573) according to the records of the Dairenji Temple, and was likely based on a statue that was brought back from the Chinese Song dynasty (960-1279). The carving depicts Amitabha with hands in the anjali (reverence) mudra, as if sincerely vowing to attain the Pure Land. The large hat-like hair frames the almost infantile face with its half open eyes and pursed mouth. The Buddha wears monastic robes and sits in the full lotus position. The statue's pupils are inlaid with semi-precious stone and the lacquer-painted exterior is coated with gold foil.
