Seokguram Grotto: Head of a Warrior
SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty (668–935); Stone; H: 55 cm; Gyeongju National Museum, Gyeongju, South Korea
This 8th century head was excavated in Seokguram Grotto and may once have belonged to a door guardian. The closely gathered hair is tied into a high topknot. The figure has a severe and ferocious appearance. The rough texture of the granite enhances the figure’s wrathful aspect. The unfinished area at the back of the head seems to indicate that it was carved in high relief on a wall. |
