Qigxin Cave 5: Prince Mahasattva Jataka
CHINA, Xinjiang, Bayingol; circa 8th century; 42.5 x 38.5 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This mural illustrates a scene from the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish. Prince Mahasattva lies on the ground with a calm and peaceful expression, offering his body to feed a hungry tigress and her cubs. His head is encircled by a nimbus and he wears a flowing stole wrapped about his arms. Next to the prince, the tigress bites into his chest. Though much of the painting has deteriorated, the outlines are still visible. |
