Kumgangsan Jangansa Temple Mugyeongdang Stupa
NORTH KOREA, Kangwon, Kumgang
The funerary stupa of Master Mugyeongdang is located within Jangansa (Long Tranquil Temple) on Kumgangsan (Diamond Mountain). According to the inscription carved on the base, the stupa was built in 1642 during the Joseon dynasty.
The stupa is 4 m high and it stands on a three-layer base. The bottom layer has an octagonal lower section and a circular upper section decorated with inverted lotuses. The middle layer is octagonal and there is a square frame on each face. The upper layer consists of a rounded bottom section decorated with upright lotus petals and an octagonal top section decorated with oval counter-reliefs on each face. Sitting on top of the upper layer is a thin round disk supporting the body. The stupa body is in the form of an unadorned squashed sphere. Above the sphere there is a steep octagonal pyramidal roof with the eaves turned up at the corners. The spire consists of stacked rings with a lotus bud at the top. |
