Shizhongshan Grottoes Niche 1: Officials

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Dali Kingdom (937–1253); Stone
These figures are located on the niche walls to each side of the main statue. The figure on the right wall is Zheng Hui. He is seated with an official’s hat, a loose robe, and his hands on his knees. Records indicate that Zheng Hui became a scholar between 742 and 756 during the Tang dynasty. He was later captured by the Nanzhao Kingdom (752-902) and made an official during the rule of King Yimouxun (reigned 779-808). Holding a position similar to a minister, Zheng Hui was greatly involved in the duties of the court, and played an important role in designing the allegiance of Yimouxun to the Tang dynasty. The fact that he appears together with the Nanzhao King in the grotto is evidence of his status.
The similarly clothed figure on the left is Du Guangting who was originally from Qingcheng in Sichuan. He was knowledgeable and well-versed in poetry and writing. He was appointed Court Historian and was highly-regarded by King Yimouxun. He especially excelled in calligraphy, and his handwriting can be found on the Stele of Nanzhao Dehua.
