Sutasa Temple: Trikaya Buddhas

SRI LANKA, Central Province, Kandy; 1751–1800
This mural in Suriyagoda Vihara was painted in the late 18th century during the Kandy Kingdom (circa 1590-1815). Divided into three rows, it portrays stories from the Life of the Buddha including Four Encounters, the Great Departure, Renunciation, and the Offering of Milk Rice. Each story is identified by an inscription within a white cartouche. The figures are dressed in the tall headdresses and colorful clothing of the Kandy Kingdom. They stand out vividly from the red background. Animals, trees, and floral patterns are used to fill empty space and add diversity to the images.
