Ajanta Cave 17: Wheel of Rebirth

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
This mural is located on the left wall within the portico. The Wheel of Rebirth depicts the five realms of cyclic existence: hell, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and heavenly beings. Much of the mural has fallen away, only parts of the heavenly realm and the human realm are still intact. The realms are portrayed within a wheel, with spokes separating one from the next. Each portion contains numerous figures, and the wheel itself is surrounded by more figures.
The heavenly realm in the upper portion displays magnificent palaces with people dressed in splendid garments, hugging and exhibiting affection. The human realm in the left portion illustrates the home life of men, women, and children. The clothing of the people is simple and plain. Figures are seen conversing, laughing, dancing, fishing, hunting, and fighting. The scene presents the grief and joy, gathering and separation that occur within the human realm. The figures surrounding the wheel are larger and are engaged in various activities. The composition of the mural is complex, and the characters exhibit detailed and diverse expressions.
