Palcho Monastery Central Hall: Flying Practitioners

CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 15th century
In Tibetan Buddhism, highly accomplished practitioners are said to possess the ability to fly freely through the air. According to the Life of Milarepa, the famous Tibetan master Milarepa had this supernatural skill.
　 This image is part of a scene from a Jataka tale painted in the central hall. Several monks and sages with topknots are depicted flying gracefully through a cloudy sky. The towering trees and the scattered clouds indicate the figures' altitude and speed.
