Buddha Pentad

CHINA; Sixteen Kingdoms (303–439); Gilt bronze; H: 28.1 cm; Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, Japan
The Buddha in the center sits on a lion throne that is on a four-legged stand. Three Bodhisattvas and a disciple flank the Buddha, all standing on lotus pedestals. An apsara is on one side of the Buddha's head, and judging from the markings, there was another apsara on the other side as well. Seven Buddhas are on the mandorla with edges sculpted into tongues of flames. The work is unique, as it does not seem to follow any recognizable style.
