Standing Bodhisattva

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Sandstone; H: 4.6 m; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
The Bodhisattva wears an elaborate headdress and jewelry that, judging from its pattern, suggests Shanxi as the original provenance. The square face, balanced on an elongated neck, looks downwards with a serene expression. Parallel feet emerge below an ornamented skirt secured by a knot in the shape of an animal head. The forearms are missing, and much of the original coloring and gold leaf is gone. A statue of this height, nearly three times life-size, is rare.
