Ding Yunpeng (1547-?)
CHINA, Anhui, Huangshan; Ming dynasty (1368–1644)
Born in Xiuning county of Huangshan, Ding Yunpeng was a painter who was also known as Nanyu and Shenghua Jushi. He acquired the essence and style of several renowned painters including Wu Daozi, Wen Zhenming, and Qiu Ying. His figure paintings exhibited delicate detail and a lively spiritual appearance. He was also skilled in landscape painting and woodblock engraving.
Ding was a devout Buddhist who regularly visited Master Hanshan to receive teachings on the Dharma and enjoyed producing Buddhist artworks. His paintings, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Eighteen Arhats, White Horses Carrying Sutras, Washing the Elephants, Arhats and several others are kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan. In addition, his Ascetic Sakyamuni is collected in Tianjin Museum and Sixth Patriarch is kept in Rongbaozhai, Beijing. |
