Mandala of Aksobhya Buddha
Mandala of Aksobhya Buddha

Mandala of Aksobhya Buddha

INDIA; circa 12th century; Copper alloy; H: 14 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This work from eastern India is a mandala in the form of an eight-petal lotus. The petals of the lotus close to form a lotus bud and open to reveal the Aksobhya Buddha at the center. There is a vajra in front of the Buddha, who has a round face and a forehead inlaid with brass and silver. His features bear characteristics to that seen in the Bagan dynasty. On the inside of each of the eight petals, there is a Bodhisattva. Heavenly beings together with lotus stems and scrolling vines support the lotus from beneath. The inscription around the round base noted that it is a dedication by Dantanaga, a lay Buddhist.
