Sari Temple: Standing Bodhisattva

INDONESIA, Yogyakarta; 8th–9th century; Andesite
The Bodhisattva stands in tribhanga posture and is framed within a columned alcove. The hair is styled into a high topknot on a head tilted gracefully to one side and gazes down under hooded eyes. There are traces of jewelry on the bared upper body and broken arms, most probably in the style of the belt and beads securing the skirt. Traces of the elaborate detailing of the folds of the material still remain. The figure's damaged left hand is raised and once held a lotus, the head of which can be seen on the stonework.
