Qigxin: Head of a Male Figure

CHINA, Xinjiang, Bayingolin; 6th–7th century; Clay; H: 10.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
The small head depicts a male figure with a life-like expression of alarm or fright on the face. The eyebrows are raised, furrowing the forehead, and the lids hood the eyes beneath. The cheeks are hollow as the mouth opens in a display of anguish that shows the teeth. The flesh-colored painting of the face remains. The hair is tied into a large topknot.
