Ssangbongsa Temple Great Hero Hall
SOUTH KOREA, South Jeolla, Hwasun
The Great Hero Hall is the main hall of Ssangbongsa Temple. Its founding date is unknown but records state that it was rebuilt in 1690 during the Joseon dynasty. After the temple was destroyed by fire in 1984 it was reconstructed.
The hall is in the form of a square, three-tier, wooden pagoda. The extended eaves are supported by intricate bracket sets with two between the columns on the first two tiers and one set between the columns on the third tier. Above the pyramidal roof, there is a spire consisting of a harmika with tapering stacked rings above. The hall houses a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha flanked by his two disciples, Mahakasyapa and Ananda. This form of structure is rare in Korea. |
