Sakya South Monastery Assembly Hall: Sakyamuni Buddha

This seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue has a broad face, curled hair, and a high usnisa topped with a gem. The long earlobes, square face, and protruding chin are typical features found on Tibetan sculptures. The figure has been dressed in a fabric robe of red and gold. An alms bowl is held in the left hand while the right hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The magnificent mandorla behind the statue is 3.8 m high while the actual statue is only 2.5 m high. The mandorla features a protective deity dancing near the crest. |
