Pitalkhora Cave 3: Lotus Pattern

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa 2nd century BCE
These painted lotus patterns are located on the ceiling and were part of the original design of the cave. Most of the pattern has peeled away; however, based on the fragments still visible, it can be inferred that they originally consisted of similar sized grids containing concentric circles of petals. Each layer of the inner circle is painted in a different color, and the lotus petals are drawn in an orderly fashion. This is one of the few mural remnants which date from the 2nd century BCE.
