Wat Phnom Oudong: Dipamkara Buddha

The statue was discovered at Wat Phnom Oudong and depicts the Buddha standing on a double lotus pedestal. The left hand tightens the material about the arm, while the slightly damaged right hand most likely forms the varada (wish-granting) mudra. The earlobes are long, almost reaching the broad shoulders, and the sculptor has left them joined to the stone of the neck. The diaphanous monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and covers the body so closely that only the hem indicates its presence. The clothing is characteristic of the Gupta period (circa 320–550) but the low usnisa, joined eyebrows, and full lips are reminiscent of the style of the Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century). |
