Maitreya Bodhisattva

PAKISTAN; circa 3rd–4th century; Schist; H: 56.5 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
Maitreya’s plain nimbus encircles the head and broad shoulders. The figure’s wavy hair is tied up in a bow-shaped topknot and pours down the back. The hair is secured by a band while an urna is located between the eyebrows. Beaded and chained ornaments adorn the chest and arms. The Bodhisattva sits on a bench with crossed ankles and feet resting on a stool. The hands are in a mudra. A male and female figure stand on either side of the footstool paying homage.
