Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA; Sui dynasty (581–618); Limestone; H: 76.4 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, USA
he radiating nimbus with images of seven Buddhas sitting cross-legged around the rim. The Bodhisattva is richly attired and adorned, notably with a long bead ornament that meets in a medallion and then continues in gathered strands on either side of the skirt. Stoles fall from the shoulders, crossing over at the chest and cascading over the arms. The masterly craftsmanship of this Sui dynasty (581–618) sculpture is apparent despite its damaged condition. |
