Yungang Grotto 13: Standing Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone; H: 2.5 m
These Bodhisattva figures are located on the east and west walls within the upper window. They have smooth, rounded faces with elongated earlobes and a slight smile on the lips. They wear unadorned headdresses and jewelry, including neck collars and necklaces. One of the necklaces is carved to resemble a pair of animals holding flowers in their mouths. Their garments include flowing stoles, long lower garments, and a belt at the waist. The figure on the east wall lifts a wish-fulfilling jewel in one hand and holds a vase in the other, while the figure on the west wall holds a cup-like object in one hand. Behind each figure is a plain mandorla and nimbus, surrounded by carvings of mountains.
